Andrew Edkins

Alan has spent his career engaged in space research. During that time Alan has been particularly involved in the development and delivery of extremely complex and sophisticated scientific devices that are flown on space missions of NASA, ESA (European Space Agency) and several other space agencies. With a career that has spanned working at ESA as well as at University College London (UCL), Alan has gained expert knowledge of the worlds of both project management (He is a Fellow of the Association of Project Management) and systems engineering (a member of the International Council of Systems Engineering). The development of flight hardware is both demanding and unforgiving. Risk management across all aspects of the endeavour is essential. Alan holds a PhD in astrophysics and has been both Head of Department and a Vice Dean.
Andrew has had a career spent working both in the private sector and as an academic. His career has primarily focussed on the built environment. From being part of the management team that built the prestigious Chelsea & Westminster hospital in London, through time spent in the complex world of custodial service and facility provision using the Private Finance Initiative, Andrew has gained first-hand experience of having to manage risks in fast-moving situations. As an academic, his focus has been on projects set in the context of the built environment. He has BA and MSc degrees and a PhD from University College London (UCL). He is emeritus professor of the management of complex projects at UCL and honorary professor at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
